WSWcreative photographer Sue Barr brings back Foxy Brown

Monday, April 11th, 2011

In my quest for creating the Bliss in Suburbia, one of my goals is finding the diversity. The first and foremost reason is so my son does not experience the exclusion of the typical white “burb” upbringing, but also because diversity is a major component that incites my creativity.

There are so many film and recording star icons from the past millennium that I want to recreate with the diverse group of woman I see daily in “Mayberry.” There is Audrey Hepburn (we do have a Tiffany’s in town) and Raquel Welch, Sophia Loren, Carmen Miranda, Marlena Dietrich …the list is endlesss. Unfortunately, there are very few
universal black icons that exist before the 80′s. There’s Josephine Baker, Leona Horne, Dianne Carroll, Dianna Ross (and a few other Ronnie Spector girl group types) and of course Claire Huxtable. My favorite is the 70′s character Foxy Brown played by Pam Grier. Foxy Brown was the embodiment of all that woman could be. She was sexy, intelligent and a staunch upholder of justice. She not only changed how we thought about black women, but gave power to all of us. With all of those values it was only natural to be obsessed with recreating this image. Since the obvious is never a given for me, I figured that someone who was not the ordinary Suburban Mama would be the perfect candidate.

Alexis bravely stepped into her boyfriend’s life in burbs to wholeheartedly become part of his kid’s life. She cooks for school dinners, helps with homework (you have to see her paper mache empire state building she built with his son for a book project…it puts my paper-chain snake to shame), schleps both kids to after school activities and does all this in heels.

WSW photographer SUE BARR- “Raising the Barr” baby casting.

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

Raising the Barr-Sue Barr

Kate Hanley (author of The Chill Guide) and I were suppose to work together on the Knack Beginning Yoga book for Globe Pequot Press.  We got together earlier in the Summer during restaurant week to discuss the shots.  Had a great lunch, got along fabulously with so much in common and poof the book deal went away. ( recession casualty)  Well that has not stopped us from working together… Kate went back to the drawing board, took her notes and created an IPAD App with Yoga moves for new moms to help them ”Chill” (it helps that her husband writes the code for this type of stuff).  She asked if I would be interested in supplying the photos for Chill Baby and coincidently that very same day some exec from a reality show called me too asking for an audition tape… ( No really!)  So Kate and I did a viral casting through facebook and other on-line community boards (Casting babies is always so much fun… They are all adorable) looking for the perfect ”Chill Baby”, Bill Cote gave us his studio (thanks Bill) and filmed the mellow casting (Oh and edited too!) and voila an audition tape for Reality TV, A “making of the chill baby app” for promotion and some pretty sweet babies too!

BTW Kate’s little  guy and his friend Henry got the gig! We shoot 2nd week of September… Stay tuned or shall we say look for Chill Baby in the App store Available worldwide.

WSW photographer Sue Barr documents Tina Fey at a Harlem Day Care Center – Books for Kids

Friday, June 11th, 2010

Photographed Tina Fey yesterday… Such a sweet person… Really much prettier and younger then her alter ego, Liz Lemon, but same type of personality. Shy, smart and Focused…
We were in a Harlem Day Care Center  for Books for Kids (http://www.booksforkids.org/) She was speaking at the dedication of a library she  donated…. She actually financed 6 in Harlem and other boroughs…
Yeah Tina!!!!
Shy, Smart, Focused and Generous!
She was funny when she spoke she said how important books and reading were for boys and girls and maybe they would grow up and be writers …. comedy writers, especially the girls because she said we need more girl writers… Then she paused, looked at the kids and said maybe one of you girls will be a future comedy writer…
In Harlem, no one knew who she was, don’t think they watch 30 Rock… When she sat down to read to the kids, she introduced herself and looked at one of the little boys (about 4 years old maybe younger)  that was a bit disruptive and said what’s your name… His answer was ” I’m da man” and then another little boy chimed in “No I’m da Man” … She dropped the introduction and just started reading!
Wish I could have whisked her a way and done a portrait sitting with her, instead I was just the hired paparazzi (actually, I donated my time), there to just document the moment for a great organization!

Turned my ISO high so my flash wouldn’t disrupt the moment and just shot.

WSW photographer Sue Barr photographs neo natal babies for Knack books.

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

I have been working on this Knack book about health and wellness of babies first year and most of it is pretty basic, photograph milestones and their office visits, some nasty skin and digestive shots, but yesterday was the best!  I got to photograph in a NICU (neo natal unit). Teenie babies 2-4 lbs. a set of twins a few weeks old and also another baby 1 month old.  It was awesome, they were healthy and ready to go home (soon) but so very tiny. Thought I’d share some of the images.
